Software Engineer II · Microsoft · Dublin

Ahmed Omran

Software Engineer by profession, Computer Scientist by passion.

At Microsoft, I build, maintain and secure Azure services including Azure DevTest Labs and Azure Lab Services, serving more than 100,000 developers at scale and university students worldwide and generating over $100M in annual revenue. I also improve and shape developer productivity across Microsoft, building internal services, AI agents and developer environments that help developers deliver more business value

At INVE.sa, I co-lead the building and rapid evolution of the product with a small team and the backing of a VC. Together, we’re working to rethink how organizations manage events and relationships.

Currently pursuing an MSc in Advanced Software Engineering at University College Dublin, with a particular interest in AI, software security, and the performance of software systems at scale.

On the personal side, I’m a blessed husband to a woman I love dearly. We’re always embarking on new adventures together, discovering new places, exploring nature, hiking, working out, trying new food, reading new books, watching new documentaries or exploring new ideas, from science to philosophy. Much of that will probably find its way onto this site.

Journey

  1. 2024–Now

Software Engineer II @ Microsoft — Dublin, IE

At Microsoft, I build, maintain and secure Azure services including Azure DevTest Labs and Azure Lab Services, serving more than 100,000 developers at scale and university students worldwide and generating over $100M in annual revenue. I also improve and shape developer productivity across Microsoft, building internal services, AI agents and developer environments that help developers deliver more business value

  2. 2025–Now

MSc @ University College Dublin, IE

I’m pursuing an MSc in Advanced Software Engineering at University College Dublin, where I’m expanding my expertise in building and securing large-scale distributed systems, while exploring how these systems deliver, integrate with and support AI.

My interests span AI, software security, distributed systems and the performance of software at scale.

  3. 2023–2024

Software/Systems Development Engineer @ AWS — Dublin, IE

I worked at the intersection of systems and software engineering, maintaining a global fleet of hardware load balancers serving a significant portion of Amazon and AWS traffic.

I shaped and built several components for a large internal platform meant to migrate internal AWS services from legacy hardware load balancers to AWS-native Elastic Load Balancing. I built guardrails and safety mechanisms around the migration process, and I built a dry-run engine that could validate a migration before it happened.

I extended the platform to support a much wider range of configurations of internal services, and worked with more than 100 internal service teams as they moved through the migration process.

The broader platform turned a process that could previously require more than two weeks of dedicated engineering work into one that could be completed in under a day on average.

I also worked on production operations and on-call, giving me a much deeper understanding of distributed systems, infrastructure, reliability, and what it means to change systems that cannot simply be taken offline.

  4. 2020–2022

Software Engineer @ Sumerge, FlairsTech & PrivateCircle — Cairo, EG

I worked across a variety of software companies and projects in Egypt and the wider MENA region, building enterprise applications, distributed services, cloud infrastructure and data-processing systems.

At Sumerge, I designed and implemented a configurable change-data-capture service that could work across different entities and databases without requiring code changes. I also built messaging and data-processing components, contributed to legacy-system modernization, optimized databases and queries, and worked on large-scale data and machine-learning systems for organizations in Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

At FlairsTech, I worked across enterprise HR software, healthcare systems and cloud migrations. I improved security in a healthcare platform, worked on API performance testing, and planned and executed the migration of 16 applications from on-premise infrastructure to AWS.

I also worked part-time at PrivateCircle, where I built Python modules for generating Excel and PDF reports and developed API endpoints for company and investor profiles.

Alongside my full-time work, I continued taking on freelance projects involving recommendation systems, semantic text processing and data analysis.

  5. 2019–2020

Mandatory Military Service @ Egyptian Armed Forces, Cairo, EG

I completed my mandatory military service as a Software Developer and used the opportunity to continue building software rather than stepping away from the field.

I participated with a team in building an AI-based system that automatically determined military clothing sizes from photographs using pose detection and deep learning, achieving 98% accuracy with two photographs.

I also built an electronic archive for large collections of medical records, processing terabytes of scanned patient files using OCR, classification and structured indexing, and making the resulting archive searchable and reportable.

  6. 2013–2018

BSc Computer Science @ German University in Cairo, EG

I studied Computer Science at the German University in Cairo, graduating with Excellent with High Honors.

Alongside my studies, I worked as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant across a range of courses, including introductory programming, data structures and algorithms, Java, programming languages and databases. Teaching these subjects while studying them myself gave me a deeper understanding of both the fundamentals and how people learn to work with them.

I pursued research in Knowledge Representation and Logic-Based AI, focusing on non-monotonic reasoning and how formal systems can represent knowledge when information is incomplete, uncertain, or potentially conflicting. My bachelor thesis continued this line of work, investigating Default Logic, as well as another theory of graded reasoning LogAG that is more computationally efficient and Formally defined, I explored the possible ways of mapping default reasoning into the language of LogAG

  7. 2004–2012

Junior Developer Programmer @ Microsoft Egypt × Ministry of Education

I was introduced to programming during school through the Junior Developer Programmer initiative, a collaboration between Microsoft Egypt and the Egyptian Ministry of Education.

I explored C#, JavaScript, HTML, ASP.NET and VB.NET throughout my school years, building my first software projects and developing what became a lasting interest in computer science.
